The wood has a colourful display of flowers in the spring. Mixed among the carpets of bluebells and dog’s mercury, you can find notable woodland flowers including lily-of-the-valley, toothwort and angular Solomon’s seal.
Many butterflies (around 35 species) are recorded each year including the silver washed fritillary, as well as many moths and some uncommon beetles. The abundant insect life attracts a variety of birds such as the spotted flycatcher, green and great spotted woodpeckers and treecreepers. Boxes for tawny owls have been installed by the Hawk and Owl Trust and are monitored by the volunteer group.
Regular fungus surveys are carried out by the Cotswold Fungus Group. To date 351 species have been recorded which is signficantly more than the nearby Dowdeswell Wood managed by the Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust currently supporting 217 species.
