The Volunteer Group

The volunteer group came into existence soon after the Woodland Trust bought the wood in 1986. The group works in the wood throughout the year undertaking a number of tasks including coppicing, ride clearance, hedge laying, dry stone walling and encouraging the diversity of flora and fauna. On average about 10-12 people attend each working weekend. Newcomers are are always welcome!

Weekly butterfly counts are also carried out by the group on behalf of the Butterfly Conservation and we now have one of the longest continuous survey records.

The group are vital in writing the management plan for the wood and work closely with the local Trust woodland officer.

As you will see in our news section over the year the group has won various Woodland Trust's awards including the Watkins medal. The group has also secured two grants for the upkeep of the wood from Hansons and Taylors of Harrogate (YorkshireTea). We have also been successful on 2 occasions in receiving groups sustainability grants from the Community Woodland Network.
